Candidates for LASIK

So many people are forced to wear glasses or contact lenses because of eyesight problems. In recent years, these people have been given a real, and reliable alternative –laser vision correction.

In modern ophthalmology it actually is difficult to imagine vision correction without the use of lasers even though critics criticized this approach due to insufficient information about long-term results. Nevertheless, every year, the desire to see again with their own eyes without the aid of glasses and lenses makes more people go to ophthalmic clinics and centers specializing in laser vision correction.

What is laser vision correction?
Laser or refractive eye surgery involves correction of irregularities and defects of the cornea using a laser. This allows the doctor to reach the desired shape of the cornea and thereby change the optical characteristics of the eye. It is used for treating defects such as disorders related to refraction like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The main advantages of this technology include painlessness, low trauma, high predictability and stability of results, speed, convenience and most importantly, sufficiently high reliability and safety.

The possibilities of laser vision correction Significant improvement of vision with laser eye surgery techniques can be achieved under the following terms:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness) from -1 to -13 D.
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness) +1 to +6 D.
  • Astigmatism of up to + / - 1 to + / - 4 .

Due to the wide range of laser correction of Dr. Joseph Dello Russo is able to choose the best method of vision correction for each patient.

Contraindications for laser vision correction

Patients with thin corneas, progressive myopia, inflammatory eye diseases, glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, and other serious chronic diseases are not recommended to undergo laser vision correction. Before the surgery you need to pass not only a survey, but a general evaluation of health and a thorough examination of your visual health must be conducted.

Age recommendation for laser vision correction

For laser correction the patient must be at least 18 years of age. This is due to the fact that in childhood process of the formation of the eyeball is not yet fully completed, and visual acuity may change. With regard to older patients, the best results can be achieved before 45 years of age. Later on, irreversible age-related changes may impair the results of operations. Lasik – One of the most reliable ways to correct vision to date

Currently Lasik is the most popular and widely used method of laser vision correction. With this method Dr. Dello Russo uses a microkeratome to cut the corneal flap (upper part of the cornea) with a thickness of about 130 microns. The flap is not cut off completely. One end of it remains attached to the cornea, like an open book. Then, an excimer laser performs the removal of the corneal stroma. The impact zone is then washed and the corneal flap is returned to its original location. With the rapid reunification of parts of the cornea, no stitches are required. The maximum possible result of visual acuity for the patient can be achieved a few days after the surgery, and results of better vision are instant.
